Goodbye summer, so long autumn, see ya Halloween! It’s well and truly winter, and how happy we are! It’s still a bit early to start getting in to Christmas with a vengeance (although it is permissible to at least utter the word now that All Souls has passed), leave getting stuck into those festive movies creeping in to Netflix for another few weeks at least, but there’s no harm in wintering up your wardrobe a bit, by taking inspiration from the most ladylike and tweedy trend around.

Lady Di may have been the muse for this summer’s unexpected cycling shorts trend, but this winter we’re looking to Queen Elizabeth II and her sister Margaret in their 1930s – 40s hey day. Think Dior’s New Look, think nipped in waists, think tweed and scarf print and nice low heels! There’s a touch of the old lady about it, but mixed with a bit of kitsch you’ll scream Gucci rather than Granny.
Get the Look!

- Try a scarf wrapped neatly and sensibly around your head to not only get that queenly look but also emulate the questionable balaclava thing Calvin Klein wants us to try. You’re bound to have one lying around that will do the trick.
EXTRA EXTRA! Scarf print is proving a big hit as leopard and snake have begun to over-saturate the high street. See Richard Quinn, Salvatore Ferragmo and Toga for starters.

- In the market for a winter cover up? Can’t go wrong with check, tweed or heritage print. Cape form is even better for that car-to-quick-jaunt-around-Sandringham-to-bar vibe.
EXTRA, EXTRA! Capes are big news, being seen in cowboy form elsewhere (notably Isabel Marant), as well as in a more structured, military-esque style (take notes from Givenchy).

- Got any balls coming up? You’ll be the belle of them when you pair your opulent evening dress with a tailored, patterned evening coat. The belt the bigger the better!
EXTRA, EXTRA! The tweed coat over longer line, fuller skirt was seen at Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs as well, so you know you’re on to something kinda cool.
