Every time I cross the Halfpenny Bridge in Dublin – which is every single day, twice at least – someone charging at me from the opposite direction is wearing a belt. Probably half of the army of strangers determined to not let me cross over the bridge quick enough to make the green light on the crossing to the street on the other side are wearing belts but definitely one of them is wearing THE belt.
This belt.
The GG belt is the latest ‘affordable’ fashion trend that self-expressed fashionistas are using to keep their pants up all over town. Style bloggers copped on to the instant lust factor of those double Gs – they’re the Wonder Women emblem for people who’d rather gain 1000 new Instagram followers than kick ass.
It’s late-ish 2017 and the belt has gone mainstream. Copies are everywhere – I suspect it’s the fakes I’m spotting on the street, not the real deal, which, though more affordable than anything else by Gucci are still almost €300.
Gucci is the designer name that people associate with the very word ‘designer’. Remember this classic exchange in Spice Girls: The Movie:
And it’s quietly having a massive moment. Those ‘ugly shoes’, the fur lined loafers. Everywhere.
This summer, the It item was the Gucci logo tee. Every Instagram influencer has one and it too has spawned thousands of high street copies.
Because these trends are so instantly recognisable, they are total status symbols. If you own a real GG belt or a real Gucci logo t-shirt or a real pair of Princetowns (please don’t), everyone will you you own a real Gucci item. And that is fashion, darling.
I saw a woman standing outside the Shelbourne wearing the Gucci shoes I’d seen placed in the Brown Thomas window that very day (I know because like how I launch myself over the Halfpenny Bridge every day, I drift passed BTs).
They’re part of the AW17 collection, that’s why you could go into Brown Thomas and pick them up today if you wanted to. But Gucci will continue to dominate seasonal trends well into next year. Its SS18 collection debuted during the week and remember these looks. You’ll see them a lot – starting now.
love this post! Would love if you could check out and follow my blog too https://missymjblog.wordpress.com/
So do you not like it? Or do you not like that it’s everywhere?
