I knew a guy in college who wore shorts all year round. He was from Oregon so it wasn’t that unusual but we met on Erasmus in Norway and were there in December when it was freezing, so that was. Because he was an All-American guy that All-American out-doorsy style came naturally to him. Even though he was by no means trying to go for ‘a look’, he wore it well.
Unluckily for a lot of guys, shorts wearing is not as seamless an affair. Even though shorts are basically just pants cut in half they are surprisingly tricky to wear without looking a bit funny.
Never mind baring your legs, the main issue for a lot of men is that your socks and shoes will be on show. Which means you have to think about what socks and shoes you wear. And correct me if I’m wrong but I’m sure that’s not something most guys want to think about in the morning.
So, first piece of advice – buy ankle length sneaker socks, you know, the type that only come as far as the top of your shoe.
There’s a time and a place for long socks and shorts that that’s on the sports field.
Then you have to think about footwear. While running shoes may be comfortable, they don’t look great unless you’re actually going running. You can still wear comfortable shoes, just go for classics like Converse, Vans and other skater-style shoes.
And that brings me to my next point: sports shorts belong in sports situations only, on the beach at a stretch (because there are such things as beach shorts you know, and surf shorts of course, and they look much better.) Don’t forget we’re talking style here – not exercise or comfort.
I’m not saying you have to emulate this fashionable fellow:
But, just because you’re wearing something out of your comfort zone doesn’t mean you have to end up looking like someone from the reject pile.
Cargo style shorts are a good bet if you’re uncertain. You can wear them with the tops you usually wear (but please not with a sports jersey – they are what they are and they’re certainly not stylish) and with comfortable shoes and (ankle) socks.
Make sure your feet and especially your toenails are up to scratch if you are going to wear sandals or flip-flops.
They are the foot-wear that look best with shorts but obviously they aren’t always appropriate for Ireland’s unpredictable clime.
Some guys like to wear shoes – often without socks – and shorts. These guys generally know what they’re doing. Scott Disick (idiot as he is) is one of those guys. You need to build up to this kind of shorts wearing if you think this is a good look because it will automatically look utterly ridiculous if you don’t wear with confidence.
One last piece of advice – don’t mix styles. What I mean is, if you don’t have any other type of shorts except sporty shorts, don’t wear them with a shirt. It would be like wearing tracksuit bottoms with a shirt, and you know that’s not cool. (I shouldn’t have to say this but by no means should you attempt to wear sensible shoes like Disick’s – not runners, Cons et al – with sports shorts. )
Wearing shorts is not a huge deal, it can just go wrong when you don’t know what you’re doing. I’ll give it to you in a nutshell – imagine your shorts with the rest of the leg attached and judge for yourself.
