In the Trenches

Post by T.M.

Burberry is credible again and has been for some time now. Emma Watson, Eddie Redmayne and Cara ‘Eyebrows’ Delevigne are but three of the young, sexy, rich, educated names that are bringing the long-standing British brand into the realms of coolness.

But still – the image that always pops into my mind whenever I encounter Burberry is former Eastenders cast member Daniella Westbrook and her kid in the heyday of Chavdom sporting the iconic print from head to toe.

burberry print chavBack in the early 2000s, Burberry’s reputation was put on the line when the print became less associated with class and more with, well, the classless. Footballers and their wives (including pre-respected designer era Victoria Beckham) soap stars and the likes of those who appeared in Sky One shows like The Villa and Ibiza Uncovered latched onto the brand, which was kinda good in a way – think of all the products they shifted! – but it damaged its reputation, which was very, very bad, because reputation will always outlive a trend.

burberry houseLuckily for it, Burberry the brand is not only known for its print. For even when Sam from Easties rears her septumless-head in my mind, it only stays there for a brief moment until it is replaced by a vision of a trench coat. No, THE trench coat.

The trench coat is one of those classic pieces that everyone should have in their wardrobe. Of course, it doesn’t have to have a designer label, but it does have to look right. Certain people made the Burberry look seem cheap and trashy, but even if you’re a budget shopper (like me!) it doesn’t mean you have to look as though you are.

The trench is the perfect coat – lightweight but also durable and a good fit for layering; buy yours in a waterproof version and wear through all four seasons.

Forget winter, spring and autumn for now, however. It’s summer and when you live in the Emerald Isle, it’s the most difficult season to dress for. It can be made a whole lot easier, however, when you can swaddle yourself in a trench.

Wear over a dress – open or closed it works with the lovely pair of high summer sandals you’re bound to be wearing with it. Wear like the brazen but strangely classy lady above and sex up your summer look in a good way.

With a trench accompanying trousers, worn with flats or heels, your outfit instantly goes the extra mile. Alexa Chung and Olivia Palermo are often seen sporting trenches in different and interesting ways from season to season:

trenchesThe trench coat is one of those items of clothing that will never go out of style. A really great one is definitely worth investing in (and when it comes down to it, you simply can’t go wrong with a classic Burberry number) but look to Zara and even Dunnes Stores for a budget version that still looks the part.

It’s easy to fall into the denim jacket trap during the summer months, and don’t get me wrong, your little denim gem works well for a number of occasions. The trench is a great item to have when you’re going to an event or out for the night. Just make sure to only imbibe clear coloured drinks…

Like other capsule pieces  – think the LBD and the crisp white shirt – the trench coat can be worn by anyone, regardless of shape, size, and age. The key, as always, is in your attitude.
